Downtown London and Camden

Some exciting things are happening here at Pure Wander! Our co-founder, Eileen, will be relocating from Boston to London with her husband this summer! London is one of the easiest places to travel to with kids and should be a must on any family’s vacation bucket list. To celebrate, here are some fantastic guidelines you get your inspiration started on a memorable trip across the pond.

Getting to Know London

Before you go, know this: London is HUGE. It’s practically a country in itself. When you vacation there it’s impossible to do it all. So decide ahead of time what’s important to you and your brood. Choose a foodie walk through neighborhoods, or explore some of London’s incredible history, as many museums are free! Maybe your family really loves sports and wants to see a soccer (called football) game, or perhaps you’re into art and love performances. All of this is possible in the great city. Also, know that ‘The City’ refers to the clustered downtown area while moving out from there includes green Covent Garden, historic South Bank, and ritzy Knightsbridge.

Choose Where to Stay

This can be the most important decision you make about traveling to this part of the world. Hotels in London vary greatly and all offer different degrees of comfort and convenience. For home-like amenities and immersive experiences, try an Airbnb rental, ideal for larger families and those who want to explore neighborhoods. More classic choices can be hotels like the centrally located Park Plaza Riverbank London orthe Athenaeum with special nanny service and exclusive kid’s concierge. Do keep in mind most London hotel rooms are smaller and cozier than in other cities due to size constraints in older buildings.

Grab a Bite or Two

Food has soul in London and runs the gamut of styles and flavors. With a strong influence from India to classic European dishes, there’s something for everyone. Borough Market is a great place to start. It’s an open marketplace with fresh, local pantry items and produce. Sample for free and have the try a few new things, like stinky cheeses, fried fish, and pickled spreads. Once the children are comfortable, book a nice dinner near the River Thames at the classic and wallet-friendly Mother Mash for some savory pies stuffed with fresh meats, or try some trendy Mexican fare at Wahaca inside some funky converted shipping containers.

Top Things to do in London with Kids

Little ones are almost never bored in London with all there is to see and do. Knock out all the great family-centered activities right away, like the Harry Potter studio tour or the London Transport Museum. Swing by iconic landmarks for an immersive look into the city, including Buckingham Palace and Parliament. During nice weather, London hosts incredible festivals and outdoor concerts as well in countless parks and public outdoor spaces. Just use the bountiful taxis, or take the Tube almost anywhere, as trains come every few minutes to whisk you downtown and beyond.

Embrace the urban adventure with your kids as you wander through London on your next European getaway!
